Who We Are
Company Information
PSR & Sons Joiners and Building Contractors Ltd
is a family run business established in 2010. Based in the north of Preston we carry out works across Lancashire and the North West. Most of our jobs are for our regular clients including the NHS, local councils and faith groups. We also provide services for the business sector and the local community.
Our Core Specialities
PSR & Sons Joiners and Building Contractors Ltd
specialise in all types of joinery works and repairs. Our jobs generally fall into two categories - Emergency & reactive jobs
and Planned & contract works.
Our
Emergency & reactive team are responsible for work such as fire door maintenance, glazing, lock repairs, remedial work following vandalism, guttering and minor roof repairs etc. We would normally expect to complete jobs such as these within the working day. We board up windows, make buildings safe, erect barriers where required, construct temporary studworks, install floor plates and make safe services. We operate an out of hours emergency service for our regular customers which is usually available at all times of day or night, 365 days a year.
Our Planned & contract works can range from jobs costing a few dozen pounds to jobs costing many thousands of pounds. Using our own skilled workforce and working in partnership with trusted subcontractors we carry out all kinds of works including joinery - eg. partitions, new door and hatch openings, internal remodelling. In addition to joinery we carry out bricklaying, general building, electrics, decorating, plumbing and heating, groundworks and cleaning. Our joinery skills are second to none and we do have staff trained in the installation and maintenance of fire doors to BM Trada
standards.
Our Social Values
People - We employ several time served joiners and encourage them to share their skill with less experienced employees. PSR & Sons have a policy of employing an apprentice each year with a commitment to supporting them on a recognised path to a full qualification. All training within the company is in conjunction with the CITB and all staff are appropriately registered with the organisation. Our team is diverse - embracing all cultures, genders, beliefs and disabilities.
Community - When sub-contracting work we seek out the best possible companies but where possible give work to local businesses. Over the years we have supported many local charities.
Environment - PSR & Sons understands the importance of protecting our environment. It is our policy to do all that is reasonably practicable to:
- Reduce the level of energy consumption and obtain utility and and hardware supplies from environmentally friendly organisations and those who use renewable energy sources
- Recycle equipment, waste products, redundant items and reduce the consumption of consumables
- Use, store, control and dispose of hazardous materials in line with best environmental practices
- Reduce carbon emissions by minimising travel wherever possible and moving away from petrol and diesel vehicles when appropriate
- Monitor our progress with a Carbon Reduction Plan
CARBON REDUCTION PLAN
PSR & Sons Joiners and Building Contractors Ltd has an ongoing commitment to the management and reduction of our business-related carbon emissions.
It is our plan to do all that is reasonably practicable to:
• Reduce our level of energy consumption
• Recycle equipment, waste products, redundant items and reduce the consumption of consumables
• Use, store, control and dispose of hazardous materials in line with best environmental practices.
As an SME, we realise that we will not be able to have the same impact on climate change as a large or global business, nevertheless we feel that as an SME we are more quickly able to have an impact. The three main areas that we look at as a business are:
1. Electricity / gas / water usage
2. Waste disposal / recycling
3. Vehicles / travel (business and commuting)
Baseline Emissions
Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past, prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions.
Due to the size of our company we do not employ consultants to calculate our carbon emissions. However we do track key indicators as follows:
Comments
Gas Usage - kwh Source - Gas supply ceased in 2022
Base year 2022 NIL
Latest year 2024 NIL
Forecast 2025 NIL
Electricity Source - British Gas usage trends
Base year 2022 - 3745
Latest year 2024 - 3696 - LED lighting installed in workshop
Forecast 2025 - 3384
Vehicles - fuel usage Litres Source - vehicle mileage tracking
Based on mileage and average miles per litre
Base year 2022 - 5934
Latest year 2024 - 5571
Forecast 2025 - 5016
Actions undertaken to reduce emissions
Electricity / gas / water usage
In our workshop, as we replace lighting, this is done with LED lights thereby reducing electricity consumption. Our employees are encouraged to switch off lights whenever they leave our workshop but as a precaution, the office staff will regularly carry out a check to ensure that unnecessary lighting is switched off. Electric heaters have been replaced with more energy efficient heaters.
Waste disposal / recycling
Any waste is separated to ensure that any items that can be recycled are recycled. Wherever possible, we re-use off-cuts of materials rather than throwing away.
Vehicles / travel (business and commuting)
We already look to minimise travel by wherever possible asking our employees to travel directly to site rather than unnecessarily driving to the workshop, then making a further journey to site. We also buddy up wherever possible allowing us to run fewer vehicles. We estimate that these actions alone halve our travel and therefore contributes to reducing our carbon footprint. A step further is that as our vehicles need replacing, we have a plan to replace with hybrid or electric vehicles. We have recently ordered our first hybrid vehichle. We are unable to replace all of our fleet in one go, but the plan will see over time that we completely move away from petrol and diesel vehicles.
These measures only work if we continue to raise awareness of these issues with our employees. This is communicated through team meetings and 1 to 1s where we also encourage employees to share their own ideas to reduce our carbon footprint.
